Liquid ammonia, also known as anhydrous ammonia, is a colorless liquid with a strong pungent odor and corrosive. As an important chemical raw material, ammonia is usually used to obtain liquid ammonia by pressurizing or cooling gaseous ammonia for the convenience of transportation and storage. Liquid ammonia is easily soluble in water, and forms ammonium ion NH4+ and hydroxide ion OH- after dissolving in water. The solution is alkaline. Liquid ammonia is widely used in industry, is corrosive and easy to volatilize, so its chemical accident rate is very high. Liquid ammonia is a commonly used inorganic non-aqueous solvent, and is also used as a refrigerant and industrial production raw material. Used in the production of fertilizers, explosives, plastics and chemical fibers. The metal-liquid ammonia solution has strong reducing properties and is widely used in inorganic and organic synthesis. It is often used in the synthesis of transition metal compounds with low oxidation states. In organic chemistry, sodium-liquid ammonia solution is used in the Birch reduction reaction to reduce the aromatic ring to the cyclohexadiene ring system. Liquid ammonia solutions of sodium or other metals can also reduce alkynes to produce trans-olefins. In the chemical industry, liquid ammonia is one of the raw materials for the production of urea. At the same time, because of its special chemical properties, it is well used in the semiconductor and metallurgical industries. Liquid ammonia is mostly stored in pressure-resistant steel cylinders or steel tanks, and cannot coexist with acetaldehyde, acrolein, boron and other substances. Liquid ammonia cylinders should be stored in a warehouse or on a platform with a shed. When stacking in the open air, it should be covered with a tent to prevent direct sunlight. Steel cylinders and tank trucks that carry liquid ammonia should be protected from heat during transportation, and fireworks are strictly prohibited.
