The metal-liquid ammonia solution has strong reducing properties and is widely used in inorganic and organic synthesis. It is often used in the synthesis of transition metal compounds with low oxidation states. In organic chemistry, sodium-liquid ammonia solution is used in the Birch reduction reaction to reduce the aromatic ring to the cyclohexadiene ring system. Liquid ammonia solutions of sodium or other metals can also reduce alkynes to produce trans-olefins. In the chemical industry, liquid ammonia is one of the raw materials for the production of urea.
